Located in nearby Seminyak, the Red Rooster is only a short motorbike ride from central Canggu, so I decided to make a little coff-ilgramige one morning, based on some very positive reviews. The small coffee shop has two levels, both facing a busy street, so it took me a while to find a comfortable seat in the almost-empty restaurant, eventually choosing a table downstairs and at the back, where I was at least close to the kitchen (you’re less likely to be forgotten if you’re making constant eye-contact with the staff).
The brunch menu was quite extensive and I went for french toast with fruit and a single-origin local coffee.
Service was quick and pleasant and I was happy to see that my coffee was served in a weird decanter flask alongside a glass for drinking – Breakfast for nerds, so satisfying! – and was enough for more than one serving (Greedy Cat portion size – check!).
When the french toast arrived, I was a little disappointed with the portion size (one slice), however, it more than made up for it in taste. In fact it was the best french toast I’ve ever eaten and I savoured every bite. Lightly coated in egg and fried, with a dusting of icing sugar and a topping of delicious fruits, it was light, crispy and sweet. I stopped myself from ordering another slice, but only just. Seriously good!
